Fogo

In reference to the inhabitants of Fogo, it is said that they are strong, headstrong and proud, and that their characteristics are similar to those of the Pico de Fogo, the "fire" volcano that shoots almost 3000 m into the sky. Fogo is the most classic volcano island of the Cape Verde Islands with many faces. The landscape of the island is characterized by a wild, partially threatening moon-style landscape, as well as an almost "cosy" swath of land with tropical vegetation, where coffee and bananas are cultivated on soft slopes and rich fields. On the slopes of Monte Velha, a thick cloud forest thrives on the edge of the volcano and further below, on heights of 300 to 1'000, bananas, papayas and citrus fruits are cultivated. For many years, an excellent wine has been produced on Fogo. It features a strong and intensive aroma, contingent upon its height of cultivation.

There are almost 40'000 people on the app. 500 km² large volcano island. Most of them can be found in the picturesque, charming capital Sao Filipe in the south-western part of the island which still reminds many of the period of Portuguese colonialisation. To this day, the life of the people on Fogo is still dominated by the immigration to America. A regular coming and going can be seen in just about every family.

From a tourist standpoint, Fogo still finds itself in an early phase. The hotel infrastructure is considered to be quite humble. It is based on small boarding houses and residentials. It is only developing in baby steps. Yet if you're looking for the original Cape Verde feel and the extremely hot temperatures on Fogo aren't a problem for you, then you may one day be among the Europeans who have ultimately settled on the island.
