Brava

Brava

Brava is the smallest island among the Cape Verde archipelago. With its 64 km² and app. 7'000 inhabitants, it is not only the cradle of the melancholic "Morna", but also a cherished summer destination of well-heeled Cape Verdeans and Europeans who enjoy the mild climate and gorgeous vegetation of Brava. The island capital is Vila Nova Sintra with app. 1'500 inhabitants. The small town is located on a craggy high plateau at app. 500 m ASL.
The island is dominated by the app. 1'000 m high volcano cone Fontainhas, from which visitors can enjoy an incredible view right on down to Fogo. The population lives from the sparse production of the agriculture, which is just about sufficient for its own needs. As with many other parts of the Cape Verde Islands, it is the family members in foreign countries, either in America or Europe, who ultimately finance most of the livelihood of those who remain home.

Those who visit Brava especially enjoy the beautiful and arbitrary nature. Brava is the home of the hibiscus flower and many other subtropical plants. Visitors to the island must always bring a healthy portion of patience and time. The transit connections from Fogo or Santiago are limited to only a few days per week. There is no flight connection to Sal or Santiago.
