The few truly surface streets of Santo Antão are the playground for adventure. A trip across the island on board a jeep or a pick-up is definitely a special experience. Surfaced streets such as those from Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande and Ponta do Sol that are plastered with cobblestones at a length of app. 45 km are an absolute exception. Many mountain seclusions and entire island sections can only be reached via dusty, coarse pathways that require great skill from the driver and high amount of steady nerves on behalf of the passengers. For those who are looking for more cosiness, he/she should take a trip with the Quad along the coastal street of Porto Novo or go on an adventurous boat tour.
